A Legacy of Leaders Vol. II
Hacham Yaakob Culi was born in Yerushalayim in 5449/1689. His commentary was called Me’am Lo’ez and is known to date as an outstanding work of Ladino literature. The Hida (R’ Haim Yosef David Azoulay, 1724 - 1806) wrote about R’ Yaakob Culi: "He was an expert in the field of Gemara study, gematria (numerical values) and commentaries, as we can readily see from his outstanding sefer Yalkut Me’am Lo’ez, which he wrote to bring merit to Am Yisrael. Fortunate is he and fortunate is his portion." R’ Yaakob died at the very young age of forty two, on the nineteenth of Av, 5492/1732.

Hacham Amram Ben-Diwan was born in Yerushalayim at the beginning of the 18th century. Later in his life he moved to Hebron and was among the leading sadikkim of the city. Known as a miracle worker and great Saddik. R’ Amram Ben-Diwan departed from this world and from Moroccan Jewry on the ninth of Av 1782/5542. His day of remembrance is observed on the fifteenth of Av, seven days after his death.
Hacham Yitzhak Ben-Gualid was born in 5538/1778 in Tetuan, Morocco. As a young boy, R’ Yitzhak showed signs of greatness in Torah and pure fear of Hashem. At 17, he had already mastered Shas and poskim, halachah and aggadah, and eventually became well known throughout the country. R’ Yitzhak Ben-Gualid passed away on the ninth of Adar 5630/1870. Hacham Eliezer Yehezkel Papo was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia in 5545/1785. R’ Eliezer’s book, Pele Yoetz, provides advice on how to behave as a Jew in different aspects of life. R’ Eliezer Papo passed away at the young age of forty-one in 5586 /1826.
Hacham Abdallah Somech zt”l was born in Baghdad, Iraq in 5573/1813. From early childhood, Hacham Abdallah sought to learn Torah day and night, always dwelling on his love for Torah. He became famous as a renowned scholar at an exceptionally young age. R’ Abdallah Somech left this world on Erev Shabbat, on the eighteenth of Elul, 5649/1889. Hacham Eliyahu Saliman Mani was born in Baghdad, Iraq in the month of Tamuz 5584/1824. Hacham Eliyahu kept his promise. The first book he authored, at the age of twenty-seven, was entitled Siach Yitzhak, named after Hacham Yitzhak Gaon. R’ Eliyahu Saliman Mani zt”l left this world in 5659/1899 in Hebron.
Hacham Shelomo Aben-Danan zt”l was born on Shabbat, the ninth of Sivan 5608/1848. R’ Yosef Ben-Naim wrote in his sefer, Malchei D'Rabbanan: “When R’ Shelomo was eighty years old he sat and learned Torah with great enthusiasm, like a twenty year old.” On Rosh Hodesh Hesvan, R’ Shelomo fell ill, and got sick again on the twenty fourth of Heshvan and passed away , 5689/1928.
Hacham Raphael Encaoua’s zt”l brilliant father was Hacham Mordechai. He was born in the city of Sale, Morocco, on the second of Tevet, 5608/1848. His family’s ancestry was impressive, tracing roots back to the famous hachamim of Spain from 900 years ago. On Friday night, the fourth of Menachem Av, at the age of eighty-seven 5695/1935, R’ Raphael was finally taken by the malachim of Shamayim.
Hacham Shimon Agasi zt”l was born in Baghdad, Iraq in 5611/1851. R' Shimon studied and served R’ Shemuel Maglad and R’ Nissim Halevi. When he got older, he went to learn with R’ Yitzhak Mordechai Sasson, one of the great Hachamim of Bavel. R’ Shimon Agasi left this world at the age of sixty-three on the eighth of Av, 5674/1914.
Hacham Yehuda Moshe Fetaya zt”l was born in Baghdad, Iraq on the second of Shevat, 5619/1859. R’ Yehuda rose to be the foremost student of the Ben Ish Hai. He confessed that he was the reincarnation of R’ Yehezkel ben Yehuda Landau (1713 - 1793), a great Ashkenazi gaon, author of the responsa, Noda BeYehuda. R’ Yehuda Moshe Fetaya zt”l passed away on the twenty seventh of Av, 5702/1942.
Hacham Ezra Hamway zt”l was born in Aleppo, Syria in 5620/1860. His diligence and toil in Torah study with his havruta – Hacham Abraham Haim Ades, boosted Hacham Ezra’s stature, and he gained proficiency in all areas of Torah study. Hacham Ezra Hamway left this world on the twenty eighth of Kislev 5706/1945. Hacham Yosef Yedid Halevi was the head of the bet din for the Syrian and Bucharian communities in Yerushalayim. He was born in Aleppo (Aram Soba), Syria in 5616/1862. R’ Yosef would sit all day in a study-hall in the Bucharian Quarter of Yerushalayim, surrounded by rare sefarim which filled the room from the floor to the ceiling. R’ Yosef Yedid Halevi left this world on the eighth of Adar 5690/1930 at the age of sixty eight.
Hacham Ben-Sion Mordechai Yehezkel Hazzan zt”l was born in Baghdad, Iraq in 5636/1876. He was known to be greatly knowledgeable in hidden and revealed Torah. Approximately two weeks before R’ Ben-Sion passed away, R’ Ben-Sion’s son, living in Netanyah, was invited to visit him. He told him he was going to leave this world, and gave him the exact date of his departure. He passed away on the twelfth of Heshvan, 5712/1952.
Hacham Sadkah Hutzin zt”l was born in 5636/1876 Baghdad, Iraq. He was also known as a great mohel, and circumcised thousands of children without payment. Furthermore, when he saw that the family was poor, he would offer them financial assistance and support. R' Sadkah left this world on Rosh Hodesh Adar, 5721/1961.
Hacham Yehoshua Sharbani was born in Baghdad, 5639/1879. When he reached Yerushalayim, R’ Yehoshua studied Kabbalah in Yeshivat Rechovot HaNahar with Hacham Haim Shaul Dweck HaKohen, and later in the Yeshivat Mekubalim next to Yeshivat Porat Yosef in the old city of Yerushalayim. He became a great mekubal, and practiced his Kabbalah pragmatically. He was nearly 100 years old when he passed away on Shabbat, the eleventh of Tevet, 5733/1973.
Hacham Ben-Sion Meir Hai Uziel zt”l was born in Yerushalayim on the thirteenth of Sivan 5640/1880. In 5654/1894, at the age of fourteen, R’ Ben-Sion’s father passed away. As the oldest child, the responsibility for supporting the family fell on his young shoulders. His diligence and intelligence were great assets in those difficult times. He passed away on the twenty fourth of Elul 5713/1953, when he was seventy-three years old.
Hacham Yosef Messas zt”l was born in Meknes, Morocco in 1892/5652. Throughout R’ Yosef’s life he tried to bring young people closer to religion and tradition. An excellent orator, he meticulously prepared his speeches and sermons. The sefarim he wrote attested to the fact that his priority was to spend each possible moment learning Torah. R’ Yosef Messas passed away in Haifa on the second of Shevat 1974/5734.
Hacham Yitzhak Abuchatzera was born in the village of Risanni in the district of Tafillalt, Morocco in 5655/1895. R’ Yitzhak’s berachot were valuable, and he helped many. He was killed in a car accident on the twenty fifth of Adar Bet 5730/1970 when he was seventy-five years old, and was buried in the Ramlah cemetery.
R’ Abraham Mordechai Nissim Harari-Raful was born in Aleppo, Syria in 5655/1895. R’Abraham started learning Kabbalah at a very young age. He studied with the famous mekubal R’ Haim Shaul HaKohen Dweck. They learned from Etz Haim and Shemonah She’arim. On the night of the twenty fifth of Kislev 5752/1992 the light that shined in Klal Yisrael which was R’ Abraham was extinguished.
Hacham Yaakob Kassin zt”l was born in 5660/1900 in Yerushalayim. R’ Yaakob Kassin passed away on the third of Tevet, 5755/1994. R’ Yaakob left behind a distinguished community, which was devoted to him throughout his sixty two years in office. His influence on thousands is felt in the community to this very day. R’ Yaakob molded and unified the New York Syrian community. Hacham Rahamim Hai Havita HaKohen zt”l was born in Djerba, Tunis on the twenty-second of Sivan 5661/1901. At the age of twenty, in 5681/1921, he started teaching Torah, and his talents in learning and teaching quickly became apparent. R’ Rahamim Hai Havita HaKohen passed away in 5719/1959 on the tenth of Shevat.
Hacham Matzliach Mazuz zt”l was born on a Friday evening, on the twenty sixth of Heshvan 5682/1912, in Djerba. R’ Matzliach studied in Djerba for seven and a half years. Night after night he sat, surrounded by sefarim, until dawn, when he went to pray in the bet haknesset. In 5706/1946, R’ Matzliach was appointed as a judge in the local bet din. After his horrific murder, R’ Matzliach's remains were brought to Eretz Yisrael, and he was buried on Har Hazetim on the third of Adar, 5732/1972. Hacham Mansour Ben-Shimon zt”l was born in Sefat, Eretz Yisrael in 5674/1914. At twenty years old, R’ Mansour was delivering shiurim as a substitute when other teachers were away. Aside from teaching in the yeshivah, R’ Mansour would deliver local shiurim at night to working men. He was a member of the High Rabbinic Authority of Yerushalayim, and was appointed to test people applying for positions as rabbis. Hacham Mansour Ben-Shimon passed away on the second of Shevat 5758/1998, and was laid to rest on Har Hamenuchot.
Hacham Meir Shalom Abuchatzera zt”l was born in Sale, Morocco on the tenth of Tevet 5677/1917. His father was the great mekubal R’ Yisrael Abuchatzera (Baba Sali). In 5705/1945, R’ Meir was appointed Hacham of Midelt on the recommendation of the Rabbinic leadership of Morocco. Hacham Meir Abuchatzera zt”l left this world at the age of sixty-six on the seventeenth of Nissan 5743/1983.
Hacham Baruch Rephael Ben-Haim zt”l was born in Yerushalayim in 5681/1921. In 5709/1949, Mr. Isaac Shalom, President of the Magen David congregation, sent a letter to Hacham Ezra Attiah asking him to send another rabbi to the Syrian community in Brooklyn, New York, to serve as an assistant to Chief Rabbi Yaakob Kassin. Hacham Baruch Rephael Ben-Haim zt”l left this world on Rosh Hodesh Iyar 5765/2005.
Hacham Yosef Moshe Ades zt”l, was born on the twentieth of Tishrei 5684/1924 in Yerushalayim. One of the past rashei yeshivah of Mir Yeshivah in Yerushalayim, R’ Beinish Finkel (1911-1990) zt”l, used to say about R’ Yosef that all of the mussar books do not compare with the "walking mussar book which was R’ Yosef." He added: "If we could only reach the level of R’ Yosef’s humility when it comes to giving sedakah." On Friday afternoon and Hol Hamo’ed Sukkot, on the ninteenth of Tishrei, 5752/1992, R’ Yosef Moshe Ades passed away at the age of sixty-nine. A Legacy of Leaders Vol. I
Hacham Haim Benatar zt”l was born in the city of Sale, Morocco in 5456/1696, to a family of mekubalim and great talmidei hachamim. . Many great hachamim came to him to hear him speak about Torah and he became known as the Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh, (The Holy Light of Life) after his great sefer, the Ohr Hachaim. R’ Haim Benatar passed away on the fifteenth day of Tammuz in the year 5503/1743, at the young age of forty-seven.
Hacham Haim Benatar zt”l was born in the city of Sale, Morocco in 5456/1696, to a family of mekubalim and great talmidei hachamim. . Many great hachamim came to him to hear him speak about Torah and he became known as the Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh, (The Holy Light of Life) after his great sefer, the Ohr Hachaim. R’ Haim Benatar passed away on the fifteenth day of Tammuz in the year 5503/1743, at the young age of forty-seven.
Hacham Shalom Mizrachi Shar’aby zt”l was born in the city of Sharab, Yemen in 5480/1720. There were forty hachamim in the Bet El yeshivah and R’ Shalom formed a group of twelve, especially chosen and corresponding to the number of the shevatim of Yisrael. This group was called the Hevrat Ahavat Shalom, and its purpose was for its members to bind themselves together. On the tenth of Shevat, 5537/1777, at the age of fifty-seven, R’ Shalom’s pure and holy neshamah departed from this world.
Hacham Haim Yosef David Azoulay zt”l was born in Yerushalayim on Friday night, the eleventh of Sivan, 5484/1724. R’ Haim Yosef David Azoulay is generally referred to by the Hebrew initials of his name – Hida. By the age of thirteen, the Hida was already giving lessons and discourses on the Torah to the people of his city. At the age of sixteen, he wrote a book on one hundred and fifty different topics called He’elem Davar. He had to major travels in his life time from 5513/1753 to 5518/1758 and 5533/1773 to 5538/1778. It was Friday night, Shabbat Parashat Zachor, and the eleventh of Adar 5466/1806, when at the age of eighty-three, R’ Haim returned his pure soul to his Maker.
Hacham Haim Pinto born in Mogador, Morocco in 5518/1758. During hislife time,wonderous stories of the Hacham's greatness circulated
throughout the communites and these were passed on to later
generations. R' Haim Pinto passed away on the twenty-sixth of Elul
5605/1845.
Hacham Yaakob Abuchatzera zt”l was born in Tafillalt, Morocco in 5567/1807. R’ Yaakov was one of the descendants of R’ Shmuel Abuchatzera who was a student of R’ Haim Vital. For most of his life, R’ Yaakob barely slept; instead he spent day and night learning Torah. R’ Yaakob passed away on the twentieth of Tevet, in the year 5640/1880.
Hacham Shelomo Eliezer Alfandri, zt”l, was born in 5586/1826. When the Hacham was only twenty-five years old, he was appointed the Rosh Yeshivah and At the age of thirty, he was elected a member of the Bet Din in Constantinople. R’ Shelomo Eliezer Alfandri, known as the Saba Kadisha (Holy Grandfather), passed away at the age of one hundred and four on the twenty-second of Iyar 5690/1930.
Hacham Yitzhak Abulafia zt”l was born in Damascus, Syria in the year 5590/1830. He was an outstanding talmid hacham and Chief Rabbi of Damascus over a period of thirty-four years. . He passed away while still there, on the sixteenth of Adar, 5670/1910.
Hacham Yosef Haim zt”l was born on the twenty-first of Av, 5592/1832, in Baghdad, Iraq. When R’ Haim was only twenty-five years old, his father passed away. The people of Baghdad insisted that he take his father’s place, and thus he became the leader of the Jews of Baghdad at a very young age. On certain Shabbatot, he would give lectures in the great bet hakneset of Baghdad. Thousands of people from all over would pack into the bet hakneset and into the yard around it to hear his words of Torah. R’ Yosef passed away on the thirteenth of Elul in 5669/1909 at the age of seventy-seven.
Hacham Haim Hizkiah Medini zt”l was born in 5594/1834 in Yerushalayim. He is well known for writing a set of sefarim entitled Sdei Hemed and he is often called by that name. In the comprehensive eighteen volumes of the Sdei Hemed, R’ Haim explains every halachic ruling from the time of the Gemara until the era of the Acharonim. R’ Haim left this world for the next on the twenty-fourth of Kislev, 5665/1905.
Hacham Haim Shaul Dweck Hakohen zt”l was born in Aleppo, Syria in 5617/1857. When R’ Haim was only forty-six years old, he completely lost his eyesight. Although he was unable to see for the last thirty years of his life, this did not prevent him from studying Torah, which he did mainly from memory and with the help of his talmidim. R’ Haim passed away on the fourth of Tevet 5693/1933.
Hacham Yaakob Haim Sofer zt”l,was born in Baghdad, Iraq in the year 5630/1870. R’ Yehudah Sadkah once said, “Two Saddikim merited to be considered the poskim of the past generation, and their works may be found in every Torah home. They are the Hafetz Haim and the Kaf Hahaim. Both of them deserved this distinction because they were cautious with their speech.” R’ Yaakob Haim Sofer was niftar on Shabbat, the ninth of Sivan, 5699/1939.
Hacham Ephraim Menashe Hakohen zt”l was born in Baghdad in 5645/1885. R’ Ephraim had a properly structured day, only it began at midnight and continued until sundown the following day. He would wake up every night for Tikun Hatzot and then learn Gemara until Tefillat Shacharit. Throughout his life, R’ Ephraim fasted frequently and denied himself simple pleasures. R’ Ephraim Menashe Hakohen left this world in 1957/5717 at the age of seventy-one years old.
Hacham Ezra Attiah zt”l was born on the fifteenth of Shevat in Aleppo, Syria in 5647/1887. R’ Ezra built the foundations of twentieth century Sephardic Jewry. For forty-five years as the Rosh HaYeshivah of Yeshivat Porat Yosef, he trained thousands of talmidim, many of whom still today serve as Rabbanim of Sephardi communities across the world. R’ Ezra Attiah passed away on the nineteenth of Iyar, 5730/1970, leaving behind the treasure of his Torah and a generation of talmidei hachamim.
Hacham Ovadia Hedaya, zt”l, was born in Aleppo, Syria in 5650/1890. He was like a young plant that was growing, and would ultimately become a beautiful, productive grapevine in Klal Yisrael. R’ Ovadia studied day and night in the bet hamidrash. He was never satisfied with his accomplishments – he pushed himself to study and to ascend to higher and higher levels. R’ Ovadia passed away at the age of seventy-nine on Shabbat afternoon, the twentieth of Shevat, 5729/1969.
Hacham Rephael Baruch Toledano zt”l was born in Meknes, Morocco in 5690/1930. R’ Rephael excelled in his study of Kabbalah and became an expert in the Zohar, Sefer Tekunim, and the writings of the Ari’zal. He became known as one of the greatest talmidei hachamim in the country. R’ Rephael Baruch returned his neshamah to his Creator on the eighteenth of Heshvan, 5731/1971, leaving behind an extensive family of great talmidei hachamim.
Hacham Yisrael Abuchatzera zt”l was born on Rosh Hashanah in the year 5650/1890 in Tafillalt, Morocco. Tens of thousands of all types of Jews from all across the world were drawn to him. They wanted to receive his special berachot. With the power of his berachot, Baba Sali managed to save the lives of many Jews. His house was never quiet, and his door was never closed. R’ Yisrael passed away on the fourth of Shevat, 5744/1984, at the age of ninety-four.
Hacham Yitzhak Kaduri zt”l was born in Baghdad, Iraq in the year 5654/1894. The great hachamim of Iraq noticed his greatness when he was still very young. R’ Yitzhak later came to be known as an expert in the writings of the Ari’zal and the kavanot of R’ Shalom Shar’aby (Rashash). His memory was, literally, a phenomenon. When people asked R’ Yitzhak for the location of an obscure statement of the Ari’zal, he was able to answer them immediately, without any hesitation. He left this world on the twenty-ninth of Tevet 5766/2006.
Hacham Yaakob Ades zt”l, was a dayan and the Rosh Yeshivah of Yeshivat Porat Yosef. Born in Aleppo, Syria in 5658/1898. In 1945, he was appointed dayan in Yerushalayim, and ten years later he was elected to the Bet Din Hagadol, first as dayan and later as the Av Bet Din. R’ Yaakov passed away on the twenty-seventh of Tammuz 5723/1963 after four months of painful illness.
Hacham Salman Mutzafi zt”l was born in Baghdad on the twenty-seventh of Shevat, 5660/1900. When R’ Salman completed Talmud Torah as a young man, and entered Bet Midrash Bet Zilka, he was the youngest student in the yeshivah. This did not hold him back or discourage him in any way. Instead, he surpassed all of the others in knowledge, and quickly advanced from shiur to shiur until he reached the highest class. On Friday night, the seventeenth of that Tevet, R’ Salman Mutzafi returned his pure soul to its Maker.
Hacham Yaakob Mutzafi zt”l was born in Baghdad, Iraq in the year 5660/1900. R’ Yaakob became more recognized and was chosen to be the Rosh Av Bet Din for the Sephardim of the Edah Haredit of Yerushalayim. R’ Yaakob passed away on the thirteenth of Sivan, 5743/1982.
Hacham Yehudah Sadkah zt”l was born in Yerushalayim on the third of Shvat, 5668/1908. Regardless of Rav Yehudah’s brilliance, he always regarded himself as nothing more than a servant of those who served Hashem. R’ Yehuda left this world on the twelfth of Heshvan 5752/1991, early in the morning, and returned his pure soul to its Creator.
Hacham Mordechai Shar’aby zt”l was born on 5672/1912 in Shar’ab, Yemen. In time, Rav Mordechai became known as a great mekubal in Klal Yisrael and was famed for bringing about nissim and niflaot. He became the Rosh Yeshivah of Nahar Shalom, a great mekubal yeshivah that still exists today. Rav Mordechai left this world on the twentieth of Cheshvan in the year 1984/5744, at the age of seventy-two.
Hacham Shalom Messas zt”l was born in Meknes, Morocco in 5683/1913. When he departed for Eretz Yisrael, R’ Shalom was escorted to the airport by Morocco’s King Hassan himself, who requested that the Hacham bless him one last time before his departure, and that became his last official act in Morocco. R’ Shalom zt”l, passed away on Shabbat Hagadol on the eleventh of Nissan, 5773/2003, at the age of ninety.
Hacham Ben-Sion Abba Shaul zt”l was born on the twenty-ninth of Tammuz, in the year 5684/1924, in Yerushalayim. R’ Attiah, his teacher and Rosh Yeshivah, was known to say that it was worth opening Porat Yosef just to produce a student like R’ Ben-Sion.
